French newspaper L’Equipe has published its annual European team of the year with La Liga rivals Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi included.
The Real Madrid star Ronaldo and Barcelona’s talisman Lionel Messi have both shined with their performances throughout the year, with the Portugal international helping his side to claim the Spanish league title, while the Argentina sensation Messi netted an incredible 91 goals in his amazing year.
The fantastic football of Barcelona, together with the success of Spain’s national team at the Euro 2012, have helped place four Barça players in the French magazine’s best Starting XI of the year.
L’Equipe considers Xavi’s passing rate to be “close to perfection”, while “Iniesta deserves the Ballon d’Or for what he has done in general.” Jordi Alba was also included in their ideal team.
Real Madrid also saw four of his players included in L’Equipe’s best team of 2012, with goalkeeper Iker Casillas, Xabi Alonson and Sergio Ramos joining Cristiano Ronaldo.
Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany and Chelsea’s Ramires are the only two Premier League players who made it to the magazine’s best team of the year.
Finally, Bayern Munich’s defender Philipp Lahm completes the best first team squad of 2012, according to L’Equipe.
