Hodgson - Age not a crucial factor for England

England, Roy Hodgson, Frank Lampard | 2012-08-19 15:09

Roy Hodgson has insisted that the age of a player will not be a barrier for him, when he chooses the squad to play at the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, as the ability is more important for him.

“Age is not a crucial factor when it comes to a footballer,” the Three Lions boss told reporters.

“It is how good he is, how fit he is and how capable he is of doing the work required.”

The 65-year-old man mentioned both Michael Carrick and Frank Lampard, as an example, after using them in England’s 2-1 friendly win against Italy, last week.

“Michael and Frank are still doing what they did at 19 but with the added advantage of having all the experience, quality and ability that matches and experience give you,” he added.

“Frank [Lampard] is a very fit lad. He is one of those players who plays a lot of matches one after another without injury.”
