Hamburg cannot afford a move for Van der Vaart, says Hamburg chairman

Tottenham, Hamburg, Rafael van der Vaart | 2012-07-16 11:37

Hamburg chairman, Carl Edgar Jarchow, has ruled out making a move for Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart, stating that the club cannot afford the player, despite the fans pressure.

"We cannot finance a move for Rafael van der Vaart," he stated to Bild.

The Netherlands international failed to secure a regular place at the Spurs' first-team, under Harry Redknapp, especially towards the end of the last campaign, and was part of the Oranje Euro 2012 squad, as the team failed to impress massively, at the competition, scoring zero points, during the group stages.

Nevertheless, Van der Vaart scored one of the Euros best goals, against Portugal, and he is still being targeted by his former Bundesliga side, with Hamburg-based billionaire Klaus-Michael Kuhne calling on the supporters to help finance a move for the forward, but the chairman has disregarded his plea.

"We as a board at Hamburg make our policy. He claims he wants to take no action. Then we take it seriously. We will not accept that an investor intervenes," he added.

Furthermore, new Spurs boss, Andre Villas-Boas, has stated recently that he is counting on Van der Vaart to help the team achieve success in the new season.
