Muamba was dead for 78 minutes but now says he is 'fine'

2012-03-21 16:36

Fabrice Muamba keeps progressing well from the cardiac arrest suffered on Saturday, despite remaining his recovery in intensive care, Bolton's team doctor has announced.

The player started to talk with family and friends on Monday and the signs of improvement continue.

“I'm glad to say that the early signs of recovery have continued. I went in and he said 'Hi, doc'. I asked him how he was and he said 'Fine',” Dr Jonathon Tobin said to The Belfast Telegraph.

However, the doctor confirmed that the England under-21 international could have had a different fate if his heart had not started beating again after 16 shocks with a defibrillator, following a heart arrest which lasted for 48 minutes on the way to the hospital and 30 after that.

“In effect, he was dead in that time.”
