Roberto Di Matteo - 'Incredible' Chelsea made history

Champions League 2011/2012, Chelsea, Napoli | 2012-03-15 10:02

Chelsea caretaker manager Roberto Di Matteo was delighted with his team's historical 4-1 win over Napoli for the UEFA Champions League and considered his players 'incredible' as he saw the Blues overturning a tie where Napoli endured a two-goal lead.

Branislav Ivanovic saved the day with an extra-time goal, finishing what club's old glories Drogba, John Terry and Frank Lampard had started during the 90 minutes to secure a 3-1 win – exactly the same result as in the first leg of the last 16, only that time favourable to the Italian outfit.

“We knew it would take a lot to win but everybody was incredible. Some of the players couldn't run at

the end because they had cramp but they just kept fighting,” he said.

For the club's history

With an aggregate 5-4, the Pensioners secured access to the competition's quarter-finals, ending the dream of the Italian debutants to live on their own.

“For the club, you know, it meant a lot. To still be able to play in the Champions League, and also you could see how much it meant to the players. I think everybody was happy and delighted that we managed to stay in the Champions League after putting on such a big performance tonight. I've had some great nights, I have to say, but I think it will probably go down in the club's history.”

He added: “To have come back from a two-goal deficit from the first leg and you saw the players tonight, how they performed. They showed passion, that they care about the team, the club, the supporters, it gives us a big boost going forward.”
