Manchester United compromise Europa League progression against Bilbao (2-3)

Manchester United have lost ground against Athletic Bilbao, as they conceded a significant 2-3 defeat at home, in the first-leg of the Europa League’s eighth-finals, on Thursday evening.

The Red Devils entered well in the game, pushing forward, and their pressure ended up paying off with Wayne Rooney opening the score in the 22^nd minute. Rooney's goal was the result of a fine counter-attack from Sir Alex Ferguson’s men, in a great build up between Giggs and Chicharito.

However, Athletic Bilbao became increasingly stronger, overcoming United in the ball possession and match domination. But, the Old Trafford outfit put on a strong defence , at least up until Llorente’s goal, which was scored at the very last minute of the first-half.

After halftime, the Spaniards continued their great act with two more goals scored in what was a thrilling second-half at Old Trafford.

Therefore, De Marcos, at 72’, put Athletic Bilbao in advantage, for the first time during the game, and after that it was a race against time for Sir Alex Ferguson’s men, who came close to the equalizer for numerous times, which a series of corners.

However, it was the visiting side who scored again, complicating the Red Devils hopes to qualify to the Europa League’s quarter-finals. Munian was the author of the Spanish side’s third goal, at the mark of the 90^th minute.

Nevertheless, United players were no quitters, as usual, and two minutes into the extra-time given by the referee, at 92’, Chicharito saw a cross being blocked by a hand, and Wayne Rooney converted the penalty spot, offering a second goal to the home side.

Athletic Bilbao left the Old Trafford with an important advantage over Manchester United, having scored three away goals which will benefit them at the second-leg match in Spain, in a week’s time.
