Messi - We're one step closer to Champions League victory

Champions League 2011/12, Barcelona, Bayer Leverkusen | 2012-03-08 11:55

Lionel Messi, who shined at Barcelona's 7-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday evening scoring five goals for the Catalans, stated that the most important thing was the team's progression to the Champions League quarter finals.

The Ballon d'Or winner reached new heights in the history of the Champions League campaign, as he became the first player to score five goals in a single match, but he preferred to talk about the team's collective work, rather than just himself.

"The most important thing tonight [Wednesday night] is that all these goals we scored take us one step closer to winning the Champions League, which is our objective," the Argentine striker told Uefa.com.

"We went out there wanting to ensure qualification for the quarter-finals and we achieved that."

"I have always said that it's fantastic when things come off for you and you play well, but only if you meet your aims for the match," Messi continued.

"That's what happened against Leverkusen. The team played very, very well, the performance had some beautiful moments and we scored lots of goals."

A hat-trick followed by a handful

Previous to his handful of goals, on Wednesday evening, the Argentina international had scored a hat-trick for his country in last week's friendly match against Switzerland, but he preferred to distribute the fruits of his work hailing the team's success instead.

"It's all about enjoying the moment – from how it went with Argentina the other week to how it's going right now for my club," he added.

"The sweetest part of it, for me, is that the team continue their run of form at the moment, winning games in style; that's the way to go as far as we can in the Champions League."
