UEFA and European clubs agree international fixtures reduction

FIFA, UEFA, European Club Association | 2012-02-28 23:35

The number of international fixtures in a calendar year will be reduced after European clubs and UEFA reached an agreement.

Clubs requested that the 12 double-headed matches in two years were cut to half, a scenario rejected by UEFA.

Both parties settled for nine international dates in the same period, with the two matches to be played in the same continent.

And while the European Club Association is happy with to have reached an understanding with UEFA, they weren’t successful in their attempt to change the timing of the African Cup of Nations.

“The agreement with UEFA is a major breakthrough for European club football. But the situation remains unsatisfactory in relation to Fifa,” European Club Association chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said.

It was also decided in the settlement that the final tournaments of all confederations will end in July and that the August friendly date will be removed.
