Parker named Best Player of the Year by England supporters

England, Scott Parker | 2012-02-28 15:26

Tottenham midfielder Scott Parker was voted England's Player of the Year by national fans. The 31 year-old beat the competition of Joe Hart and Ashley Young.

Parker made a strong impact in the past 12 months, returning in an impressive form to the England national squad, making seven appearances in their nine games and becoming a key member of the team.

He is now being tipped as one of the favourites to captain the team on Euro 2012, being Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard, and has expressed his 'honour' at being voted the best player by the supporters.

“It's a great honour. Just looking at the names that are on the trophy, it's quite an achievement. It's a proud moment for me, I'm delighted. When you feel the fans are appreciating what you've done, it's extra special. It's been a good year at international level so I'm delighted the fans have picked me.”

The Football Association confirmed Parker was named by 17 per cent of the 15,000 voters and was followed by Manchester City keeper Joe Hart and Manchester United winger Ashley Young. He succeeds Chelsea full-back Ashley Cole, who won last year.

Pearce agrees with choice

England caretaker manager Stuart Pearce has hailed the experienced midfielder and claims it was a fair decision to consider him the Player of the Year in the country.

“I think (winning Player of the Year was) rightly deserved. I think he has been outstanding for us and a good member of the group. I think he has developed, without a doubt, as a player and has probably developed as a man as well. Sometimes it takes time to get your confidence around a group. I think he is now comfortable.”
